THE ISLAND OF PAG is 63 kilometres long and only 5 kilo-metres wide. In places its width does not even exceed 3 kilo-metres. Pag lies in the Velebit Channel, it is a spur of Velebit and belongs to the group of Kvarner islands. Its indented sho-reline with its many bays and promontories measures 269 kilometres, and the fine sand and shingle lapped by a crystal-line sea form countless beaches of singular beauty. Most of the hills are bare, but some are overgrown with maquis, pine, immortelle and sage. The town of Pag - first appears as the ancient settlement of Pagus, and was established as the town we know today in the 15th century, becoming the tourist, administrative and cultural center of the island of the same name.
